From the Hip Friday

Water over roadway.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Hoi An, Vietnam. This is actually one of my favorite from the hip photos. I like it so much that I was convinced I had already shared it. I did a little poking around and didn’t see it in my “FTH” folder so I decided to post it today. Apologies if it’s already been featured here!

One wet day in Hoi An the streets near the river were flooding. Of course, that didn’t cause the motorbikes to drive any slower. Even the rickshaws were going strong. I snapped a photo while we were walking by to help me remember the crazy roads. Driving in the rain will never phase me again.

Kiva Loan: September/October

5 down, 1 to go!

My Kiva loan for September and October goes to Khadidiatou in Senegal. I’ve been itching to visit Senegal since I will likely never live this close by again. Sadly, so far my airfare searches have come back with very expensive results. I’m not giving up hope yet.

Photo from Khadidiatou’s Kiva listing. She’s in the middle, raising her hand.

Khadidiatou’s work involves processing grains. She is requesting a loan to help build her supplies of millet, corn, beans, and peanuts. Four things I very much enjoy eating. Hopefully her loan will lead to future business success.

At the top.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from the top of Burj Khalifa. Well, as far as the observation deck anyways. My sister visited me way back in 2011 while I was living in UAE. One night we decided to view the city of Dubai from up above. While we were taking photos I snapped a quick shot of us in the mirror. Can’t wait for my sister to visit me here in Marrakech.

Newcastle: In Lights

This is not about Morocco.

I know, I know! I’ve barely said a word about Morocco but I will… soon. I’d really love to get Australia wrapped up before I start diving into a whole new set of posts. (And then there’s Singapore too!) So just a little more of Australia coming your way…

One chilly night about a week before our departure, the citizens of Newcastle headed out into the streets to celebrate the launch of City Evolutions. As part of the initiative to revitalize East Newcastle (our neighborhood), the city (and partners) put together an interactive contemporary art installation on the oldest street in the city.

Watt Street was lit up with lights and digital projections. The shops and galleries were open along with several food stalls and artist booths. There were street performers, musicians, and fire breathers too. There were even collaborative painting projects set up for children to participate in.

Our housemate was involved with the planning and publicity so it was fun to see the culmination of all her many efforts. Plus, I always love to see a city come together to celebrate its history and art scene. All in all, an illuminating night.

P.S. The City Evolutions website lead me to this awesome old photograph of Newcastle Beach. Check out the buns + straw hat combo on the lower left. Hehe.

From the Hip Friday

Modes of transport.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Marrakech, Morocco. I snapped this photo shortly after my arrival in the city. While walking in the Medina I started clicking away when I noticed the varying modes of transport. It’s not uncommon to see donkeys and horses heading down the road next to the motorbikes, beater taxis, and fancy town cars.

All part of the charm of living in Morocco.

Instant Summer

It felt short.

I’ve been in Morocco for about three weeks* now and this past summer feels like so long ago. Like always, it was wonderful to see friend and family, and reconnect with my favorite corner of the earth.

I pulled out my instax camera and some partially exposed film. Here are a few instax photos from over the summer:

picking peaches with Jenny

Hannah and Allan at Molly’s wedding reception.

Annie and me at Molly’s wedding reception.

The perfect location for Molly’s wedding reception.

And a lost but then found photo of Joel from summer 2012

So good to be among the people you love.

*All is well. Just insanely busy.
