From the Hip Friday

Temple grounds.

Today’s photo from the hip is from Sri Lanka. We stopped at a temple on our way to Unawatuna and I really wanted to capture the boys playing in the courtyard. I’m sure you won’t have any problem believing that I didn’t use the viewfinder seeing as it’s crooked!

Today’s post is #499… so you better believe a giveaway is coming up for the big 5-0-0!

Morning market.

Today’s photo from the hip comes from Molly. You’ve seen her here before when she answered 10 Questions and when I wrote her an ode for her birthday. Or when I wrote her a goodbye post that was so touching she didn’t actually leave. (Ok, there might have been other factors…).

Molly submitted this photo that she took while enjoying a morning walk through the market in Hoi An, Vietnam. I love how she managed to capture this sweet old woman on the edge of the photograph.

Thanks, Molly!

Bags of grain.

Today’s photo is from Magalie. You’ve seen her here before when she eloquently answered 10 Questions. She recently returned to Canada after enjoying a two year honeymoon. Imagine that!

Magalie submitted a photo taken from the hip at the central market in Nis, Serbia. If you don’t believe it’s from the hip, look a little closer. I think that’s her in the reflection in the glass.

Thanks, Magalie!

A new feature!

I was discussing blogging and blog features with a friend recently and realized…I should start one of my own! I do have the 10 Questions series but I want to do something more regular.

So…

Introducing: From the Hip Friday

You know when you’re in a new and exciting location but you feel just a little too shy to point your camera in someone’s face? Or you’re speed walking through town and just don’t have the time to stop? It’s times like these when I find myself shooting from the hip.

Shooting from the hip means you hold your camera at waist level and take a photograph without framing the scene in your viewfinder. For me, I usually get a blurry mess. But every once in awhile I manage to capture something I like. It’s definitely a skill I want to improve and luckily I found this site which has plenty of good tips and amazing examples.

Every Friday I will feature a photograph of mine or yours that was taken from the hip!

This one was taken on the street in Luang Prabang, Laos.
