Masalama / The Big 500 / Giveaway!

Trifecta of sorts. So this post is kind of big. Not only am I down to my very last few hours in Abu Dhabi, it’s also my 500th post. Sounds like a great time for a giveaway to me!

It’s definitely a funny feeling saying goodbye to the city and country that’s been my home for the past 3 years, not to mention my friends that became my overseas family. I plan to write more about my departure, just at a later date. It’s all a little too messy at the moment.

So let’s talk about that giveaway!

In keeping with the tote bag theme of my last two giveaways, I picked up this pretty little thing while in Luang Prabang. It features the Laotian alphabet and would be perfect for the farmer’s market, library books, or just everyday. As much as I wanted to keep it for myself, I thought it would be the perfect item to pass along to you!

All you have to do is leave a comment and tell me about a time you said goodbye. It would also be really nice if you followed me too.

Contest ends at noon June 11th, Pacific Standard Time, open to all.

Now it’s just 3 flights and approximately 36 hours of travel time and I’ll be home!

xo, jill

  1. I am not going to enter your (very generous!) giveaway because Tony and I will be traveling to Laos some time in the near future, so I’ll let those that don’t have a trip there on the horizon try their luck instead. However, I will tell you about a time I had to say goodbye: it’s right now! In 3 short weeks, I will be packing up and moving out of the apartment I have lived in for the past 4 years and say goodbye to the city I have lived in for the past 7 years… Even though I’ve long cursed Nashville, somewhere along the way it started to feel like home, so it is both scary and sad to know that I’ll be leaving it behind very soon. Also, I moved here to work on my PhD in Psychology, and I have *finally* graduated, but realize that I am now leaving that life behind me as well, because instead of continuing on in academia, I’m instead heading off on this life-changing trip. So there are a lot of goodbyes in my life at the moment… and a lot of tears!

  2. That is a great bag! What are you going to do once you are back?
A time I said goodbye? I feel like my adult life has been all about goodbyes. I never stay in a place for more than 3 years. Plenty of goodbyes in Bellingham, quite a few in Chicago, and next year we will most likely take off from Indianapolis. Life is a series of beginnings and endings. I am really bad at goodbyes. I get too emotional and instead of letting it out I shut down and take off. I should probably work on that as I have a fair few more to deal with in this life.

  3. Wow. what a milestone – huge congrats!!!

  4. Too many goodbyes and so many to choose from so I’ll mention two. Saying goodbye on your first day of kindergarten and saying goodbye when you went to college. And then there was the slumber party at Kaitlin’s…..

  5. Ohh!! I love that bag! While Laos is on my list of places to get to, it won’t be for awhile, so I’ll tell you about a goodbye. I just had the best goodbye in Honduras when I left a couple weeks ago. I know that sounds weird, but leaving this time and knowing for sure I would be back in a few short months made for a happy goodbye! I took a taxi to the airport and was slowly bumping along the (only) street in the town I stayed in, and had people waving and running up to the taxi to say “see you soon!” to me. As we turned the corner onto the road to get out of town the driver turned and said to me, “how long have you been living here?” – he thought I was a local! Having so many people sad to see me go but excited to see me again soon made for a great goodbye :)

And CONGRATS on your 500th post! I will miss seeing UAE on my audience page hehe!

Because I am a two-time awesome Jill Giveaway winner, I’m forgoing entering so someone else can enjoy having a fun bag from afar to put to good use! However, I do want to say congratulations on 500 whole posts! That’s big time blogger status right there. Hoping your return was a smooth one. Looking forward to seeing you hopefully in the not too distant future! :)

(Forgot to mention goodbyes, delete my other comment so I don’t have two entries, please). The last time I said goodbye was 2 years ago when my sister moved to Norway for school! It was incredibly hard and I know there is a good chance she’ll stay (she loves it there) but I’m glad she finally got to visit the place she always wanted to go.
    Thanks and good luck everyone!

  10. oh jill! the time that I remember most is when I left camp. I worked at a summer camp up in minnesota for three years during college, and it totally changed who I was, and shaped who I am now. everyone else lived up there and went to school together, and I was the only one who lived far away and had to leave two weeks early. it was very sad.

  11. Saying goodbye to my parents before I moved out to South Korea was sad. As excited as I was about moving abroad, I also knew that I probably wouldn’t be seeing them for a while as I only have plans to keep travelling once I finish my contract. Instead I’ve devised a plan to lure them out to Asia for a visit. 😀

Saying goodbye to you when you resigned from Al Jawhara was a huge bummer, and then having to to it all over again a couple of days ago- lame! 😛 Looking forward to hopefully seeing you in July though 😉
    xoxo
