Introduction to Sri Lanka

We finally meet.

There’s not too too much to say about the beginnings of our trip to Sri Lanka. I would just dive right in to the more interesting stuff… but it doesn’t feel natural. I’m so linear that way. I’ll at least try to make it quick!

It was a long wait at the airport due to fog delays.

We arrived in Colombo a bit later than expected and set about getting a taxi down to Hikkaduwa. Mike found us a deal, which later turned out to be a miscommunication which is how I’m choosing to describe a potential scam. But for the time being, we were happy. Sleepy, but happy.

Four hours later we reached our hotel in the dark and in the rain. We ran out to the beach for a hot second before the rain drove us back in.

Our first morning we walked along the beach seeking breakfast and surfboards.

Turns out, I’m a better surfer in the chilly waters off the Oregon coast and in the company of my sister. I ditched the surfing and played on a boogie board while Mike kept at it. Naturally, there’s not evidence of this as we were warned to not leave our camera on the beach.

Later in the day we hired a scooter and scooted around town. It’s always more interesting to get away from the tourist strip and see where daily life takes place. We found the lake and relaxed there for a bit before racing back to the beach for the sunset. (Note: Sitting on the back of a scooter is the perfect time to start singing annoying Shania Twain songs in your driver’s ear. Especially if you can change the lyrics to give it a much more personal touch.)

The cloudy skies foiled our sunset viewing plans…

but didn’t stop us from taking silly photos.

With not much going on in town, we had dinner at a place that claims to show feature films. I say “claims” because whatever we were watching, it was not 2012 as advertised. Not that low-low-low budget films can’t be amazing… but when it’s the world that’s ending, you kinda gotta go for broke.

Excitement picks up on day 2. Don’t you worry.

The Magic’s in Musandam

And the dolphins didn’t hurt.

Last year some friends took a dhow cruise in a secret little part of Oman. Ok, it’s not a secret… but it is a tiny piece that’s not connected to the rest of the country. It’s called Musandam.

Musandam is famous for it’s fjords and has been called “The Norway of the Middle East.” I’ve never been to Norway… but that claim is probably a bit grandiose. Nonetheless, I’ve been wanting to take a look. When good weather and the proper motivation (a guest in town) aligned, we packed our bags and headed to Musandam.

The six of us boarded our boat to find that we would be the only passengers for the day. We didn’t mind at all.

The cruise sailed us along the fjords while dolphins kept us entertained.

Later we dropped anchor for swimming and snorkeling.

This was when my pesky little fear of putting my face in the water became not so little. I’m not exactly sure what the problem is but I’m beginning to narrow it down. Whenever the activity of snorkeling is introduced (in the immediate moment not just chatting about it), I become very anxious. Like, start crying anxious. I understand that I’m not required to join, but I still feel like I should. Then I’m all mixed up and scared of the water even though I know everything’s going to be ok.

Emotionally complicated story short… I’m standing on the edge of the dhow trying to jump in and feeling horribly embarrassed for being so freaked out to do something I’ve done many times before, when a nearby dhow calls out to let me know that they too are eagerly awaiting my jump. Oh jeeze.

It was a process. But I did it. And it was fine. Even nice.

Special thanks to Shauna for treading water in the jellies for so long and Mike for jumping with me.

Look at the urchin our guide pulled up:

After the cruise we headed back to the Emirates, but not before stopping at a little playground/lookout combo.

It was a very happy day.

Instant Sri Lanka

Refreshing.

Last night we returned from a fantastic trip to Sri Lanka. It is such a beautiful and diverse country. Despite its small size, Sri Lanka presents quite the challenge for travelers hoping to see it all. In most places, the simple roads cause what may seem to be a short distance to take a long time to traverse. The 98 kilometer drive to our first destination would be a good example. It took 4 hours. Thankfully, friends who visited previously had given us fair warning. We decided to keep our explorations limited to the southern part of the country. In the future, I’d love to see what the interior and eastern coast have to offer.

Lugging around my new toy camera was a bit annoying… but I love the instant photos. Explaining “polaroid” technology to the locals was fun too.

Here’s the instant photo version of our itinerary:

Before I get any further into Sri Lanka I want to post about my recent trip to Oman. After that, who knows… there might just be a giveaway on the horizon…
