Look what the cat dragged in.

I love my post box.

A few weeks ago I took my weekly Saturday morning trip to the post and found “adorable” in my box. A handmade card from Liz and Taune!

You see, they found a card they liked at a shop and decided to plagiarize it at home. Naturally, this lead to a kitten drawing contest.

Lucky me they sent their submissions. Obviously, both are equally cute and charming. I would have to assume that the official judge leaned towards his wife’s kitten, seeing as he has a lifetime ahead of him with her. (Liz won.)

Included in the card was a bonus Billy Brontasaurus and a depiction of me in the desert. Love.

Not to mention a little plea from Liz… everyone wants to be famous, don’t they?

And I almost missed this hilarious feature on the back!

Thanks ladies!

There’s loving your teacher…

…and there’s loving your teacher.

I had an encounter with a student today that left me quite puzzled. I’m not exactly sure about the message she sent… but here’s the message I heard:

“Ms. Jill, when I am big like you… I want to be your lover.”

And it’s not even the same girl who sent me this!

It’s weird and all, but I’m still flattered.

Al Mirfa Watersports Festival

Minus the watersports!

This past weekend I drove out to the desert to visit my dear friend Frances. We filled our time with the eating of delicious sushi and the attending of the Watersports Festival. The only thing was… we arrived too late to actually see any watersports.

I wasn’t too bothered. I did get to eat some tasty yet rapidly melting ice cream and gawk at amazing creations in sand.

Like the Burj Khalifa… the world’s tallest tower…

And the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque…

Well done.

So I went to Qatar.

Almost forgot about that.

A few friends spent last weekend galavanting in Qatar which made me think, “Hey, I’ve been there!”. Our return flight from Bangkok left us with five free hours in the tiny gulf country. Of course Molly and I were game to pay the $30 visa fee to get out of the airport for a few hours.

Our first stop was the Museum of Islamic Art. The architecture of the building is amazing. When you walk inside you immediately feel like you should whisper and walk on your tip toes. I would describe it as “grand.”

Qatar

As you may have guessed by the name, the museum features Islamic art and artifacts. The collection draws from all parts of the Islamic world but Turkish items seemed to pop up most frequently. My favorite pieces to admire were the mosaics with geometric designs and the clothing.

As lovely as the museum was, I was pretty tired from the long plane ride and our busy stay in Thailand. I can’t say I gave each piece it’s deserved moment of contemplation… but I did enjoy the collection.

After the museum we walked over to a more traditional styled souk than the ones found in Abu Dhabi. A souk is a marketplace where you can buy anything and everything. In Abu Dhabi when you go to a souk you’re never sure if you’ll find stacks and stacks of brightly colored plasticwares or a fancy over the top offering of perfumes and carpets. At this souk I actually felt like I was in Arabia. Unfortunately for us, the shops were closed during the day.

We spent a bit more time along the water admiring this giant pearl… Ok, we were actually intrigued by a pair of men who climbed up onto the statue to have their photo taken with the pearl up close. It was puzzling and entertaining and perfect.

Eventually we headed back to the airport and continued on our way to Abu Dhabi. Although we only spent a few hours there, I’m pretty content with my Qatar experience.

Still giggling.

Hehe!

One of my very sweet co-workers offered me this worksheet to use with the kindergarten students that I am now teaching three days a week.

Fujairah in February

I didn’t forget.

Way back in February I had a very demanding visitor to entertain. She insisted we visit nearly the entire country during her stay. Well, I did my best and took her northeast to Fujairah.

After spending a bit of time hunting down a camping spot, we ended up just pitching our tent on the beach in the dark. (One of my favorite aspects of the UAE is that you can essentially camp anywhere, as I’m sure you’ve noticed by now). Waking up early in the morning we were treated to a lovely sunrise during breakfast.

We tried to make it out to a popular waterfall in the area, but my car wasn’t up to the off-road challenge. Instead we drove out on a cliff above the waterfall and marveled in disgust at the massive loads of litter covering the landscape. I mean, it was gross. Waterbottles, old shoes, dirty diapers… yuck. While Molly decided to scramble down the cliff to check out the waterfall, my mom and I got to work picking up as much trash as we could fit in my car.

I skipped the litter when taking photos and opted to capture the mountains and vegetation instead of the junk.

On our way back into the city of Fujairah, we stopped by Fujairah Fort. It happened to be closed but we still poked around the outside.

Next we stopped at Fort Hayl. It was smaller than the first but it was open!

My favorite feature of these forts is how sneaky you feel when you discover how to reach the next level. You are standing on the ground floor… and it’s obvious there are more stories above you, but it’s not completely obvious how to get there. Hint: Those sticks in the corner!

I also like the intricate designs around the windows.

And there’s Molly on the roof scouting for enemies in the distance.
