3 Things I Actually Miss About Abu Dhabi

Time and distance.

You never know what you’ll actually miss after leaving a place. Last year I made a few predictions when I wrote “5 Things I Will Miss About Abu Dhabi” and “5 Things I Will NOT Miss About Abu Dhabi.” Since it’s been over a year now, I thought it would be fun to think over and share what it is that I actually miss. Taking a quick little trip there last month helped to straighten everything out in my mind.

The Top 3 Things I Actually Miss About Abu Dhabi:

Celebrating Molly’s marriage (missing Hannah and Sarah)

1. My friends. I know. In the original post I didn’t include friends and colleagues because I already knew that I would miss them a lot. Well, it turns out… I miss them tremendously! There’s no way they couldn’t be included on this list. Spending time with friends during my quick visit back just solidified how much I love them. Like I said before, it felt like I had only been gone for a few weeks. We’ve all bonded through our shared experience in the UAE in a way that’s hard to explain.(Soldiers in the trenches feels a bit too hyperbolic.) I’m so glad I had great friendships to help me get through the difficult times and celebrate the great times.

2. Clean sheets. I probably bring this up several times a week. There’s nothing like coming home from a stressful day at work or a long trip to find your bed perfectly made with a fresh set of clean white sheets. I was seriously spoiled. Living in a hotel apartment might be the greatest thing ever simply for this reason. Amazing. It’s really not the same feeling when you wash and change your own bedding…

3. The food. That’s pretty general but by “food” I mean:

1. The extensive and cheap grocery stores
2. The bodegas on every corner
3. All of my beloved novelty snacks (Square Crisps!!)
4. Saj 2 Go, Forty Fruity, and other regional eateries
5. Meals prepared in Emirati homes

In short, I’m pretty content with not living in Abu Dhabi anymore but I’m also grateful for my three year experience there. I’m glad I hit the green light on that adventure.

Leaving the UAE… again.

A whirlwind.
I’m back from my quick trip to the UAE. It ended up being two days in Abu Dhabi and two days in Dubai. It was exhausting, and emotional, and amazing. The wedding was beautiful, loving, and intimate. I don’t think it could have turned out any better. Seriously looking forward to seeing the photographer’s photos. It was definitely strange to be back in a place so filled with memories, both good and bad. I could feel a year’s worth of distance between the city and me, but not when it came to my friends. It was like I had only been gone a few weeks. Being able to pick things up where you left off… Now that’s a true test of friendship. It was actually much harder to say goodbye and leave this second time than the first.

Turns out I was so busy during this trip that I barely even turned on my camera. All I got are these photos of Frannie’s balcony that I took while watering her flowers.

Her view. The Capital Gate. “World’s furthest leaning man-made tower.”

Underwater Wild Wadi

Splish splash!
Since I’m currently in UAE, it seems only fitting to share a few photos from a trip to Wild Wadi in Dubai last year.

Mike, Allan, Hannah, and I headed over to cool down from the heat and enjoy the new water slides. We weren’t the only ones with that idea. The crew of the Amazing Race was also there waiting for the teams to arrive.

I used my underwater camera and attempted to get a few action shots on my favorite slide… but well, mostly what I got was Allan!

It was a fun day with good friends. I’m glad we were all able to create so much fun during our somewhat stressful experience in UAE.

Hey camels, here I come!

Flying out.

I did not expect this to happen so soon (or ever!)… but life and friendship are taking me…

back to Abu Dhabi!

It will be a quick visit to attend a very special wedding, plus a side trip to Singapore on the way. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on some wedding crafts and celebrating with the happy couple. There might be a few favorite snacks I’d like to get a taste of too!

PS I scheduled a few posts for while I’m gone. See you next week!

Even kitties have a sweet tooth.

Meow.In Abu Dhabi there was a fairly fancy sweet shop on my block. I never went inside but I’d often glance at the extravagant cakes in the window on my way by. One afternoon when I came home from work, I noticed someone else taking a little peek too…

So cute.

Instant Eateries in Abu Dhabi

A random selection.A few nights ago I was sifting through photos on my computer looking for just the right one to wish Molly a “Happy Birthday.” In the process I came across a series of instax photos I completely forgot about. I don’t think there was any rhyme or reason at the time, but now I have a little collection of Mike, Molly, and me eating at random eateries in Abu Dhabi.

In an effort to post about somewhere other than Australia, here you go:

Konopizza at Madinat Zayed Shopping Center / I was so excited for this gimmicky pizza!
“The Russian Restaurant” / Could not tell you its actual name or how to get there, but it’s delicious.

Yogoday / Sampling all the frozen yogurt in the city for “research purposes.”

Saj 2 Go / Still crave a halloumi saj some days.

Forty Fruity / A classic choice. My favorite included strawberry, mango, guava, and avocado.
